Hansa Tonstudio is a recording studio located in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, Germany.[1] The studio, famous for its Meistersaal recording hall, is situated approximately 150 metres from the former Berlin Wall, giving rise to its former nicknames of "Hansa Studio by the Wall" or "Hansa by the Wall".[2]
Meanwhile, the Meistersaal, noted for its outstanding acoustics,[3] was used not only for light music productions but also for classical music recordings. In the early and mid-1980s, all productions were overseen by English record producer Michael Blakey. The studios have played host to many well-known acts, including Tangerine Dream, David Bowie,[4][5] Brian Eno,[6] Iggy Pop,[2][7] U2,[2][5] Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds,[2][6] Claw Boys Claw,[8] Depeche Mode,[2][9] Marillion,[9] Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Boney M. and most recently Manic Street Preachers, R.E.M., Snow Patrol, Kent, Living Things and Go Go Berlin. Bowie is said to have written Heroes at a window of the studio, from which he saw his producer, Tony Visconti, kiss backing vocalist Antonia Maass, an image that made it into the song's lyrics.[3]
We organise public studio visits on selected dates but also private tours always depending on the studio availability. Prices for the public studio tours are depending on final group size and what parts of the studios we can visit on what day & time - usually we can offer here 30-50 EUR pp with a total group size of like 25 people. When we have a special guest (producer, sound engineer, musician or band) with us or doing a sound workshp or an exclusive recording session it will be more epensive then.
Smaller groups/ private studio tours are more expensive per person, again depending on what parts of the studios we can visit on what day & time. In addition to the studio tours we have the possibility to book Hansa Studios for exclusive recording sessions or special events, like a team building event or a premium company party. Working and meeting space is provided in group studios on the ground floor of the Glogau Artist in Residence (GlogauAIR) facilities in the Kreuzberg neighborhood. GlogauAIR is a competitive, international residency program housed in a spacious former school building (also a registered historical site, designed by the architect of Berlin's old town hall and the Pergamon Museum), and located just half a block from one of Berlin's loveliest city canals.

This year I had the fortune to enlarge my creative spot at our magic shared artists atelier Studio 4, in Friedrichshain, Berlin. Now I have an extra wall that opens a lot of new possibilities!
I know for someone having one more wall just 2x3m wide may look not that big improvement, but for me is such a blessing! Before that, I have played crazy Tetris with all my art supplies, stock of prints, packaging, and artworks, and now everything has finally found its place.
I first entered the Prenzlauer Berg studio of Chiharu Shiota one year ago. How quickly a year passes, flying by in the blink of an eye. I took off my shoes at her request: blue or grey slippers? Blue. Shuffling through the large live-work space, I attempted to keep my feet from faltering in the oversized shoes, staring through giant windows that overlooked industrial snaking train lines. Carriages silently glided through, all noise cancelled by thick panes of double-glazing. As a former spy vantage point covertly positioned to look from East into West Berlin, I imagined its past life: a building with a different identity, secretly surveying the enemy beyond the wall.
