I've started a couple of other posts here regarding James Gorey, but will perhaps consolidate future updates to here.

I discovered an intriguing reference in the Victorian Government Gazette from August 21, 1866 (below).

It concerns a public auction of James Gorey's 71 acres at Malmsbury to pay Patrick Donovan, who was the defendant in an unspecified Supreme Court matter.

The auction must not have gone ahead, or failed to sell, because according to Dr John Gorey's book, the land remained in James Gorey's possession until 1876.

According to Dr John Gorey's book (1991), Patrick Donovan was litigious. He sued Mary Gorey (James' daughter) in 1866 for three pounds, but settlement was never made.

It was possibly related to the case mentioned above, and perhaps it was settled before it went to court. Interesting.

A map of the area from that period shows that Donovan had land across the road from James Gorey.

I discovered a reference to J Gorey in The Argus from August 1, 1881 from the Government Gazette regarding his appointment to the Redesdale Recreation Reserve committee of management.

It was probably James Gorey, who died in 1883, but may have been his son James, or possibly John.

Note: The surname is printed as Govey in the Gazette, but I believe this to be an error. I've found no reference to any Govey living in Redesdale at that time.
