PRESS RELEASE
Morgan Hill City Council Candidate Gordon Siebert taught five civics
classes for Seniors at Sobrato High School last Friday, challenging
students to understand why city government is so important to them.
With thirty-five years of public service, both in private and public
sector jobs, Siebert was well qualified to take over the classes of
Mr. Barnes, Mr. Macatangay and Mrs. Wallace for a day to explain how
government is financed and works for the benefit of all residents.
He started by asking students, without a show of hands to avoid
embarrassment, how many of them had showered that morning. And how
nice it was to have water come from the showerhead when they turned it
on? What would that service be worth to them, he asked.
“more”
Likewise, they discussed what it would be like to have three months of
garbage in their backyard because there was no trash service. Having
that trash picked up was very valuable to them when they considered
the alternative.
Then they discussed other local government services such as providing
roads, flood control, sewer services, traffic enforcement, public
safety and fire protection among others. As a whole, most students
agreed that they would be willing to pay a great deal more than is
actually required to maintain these services that many take for
granted.
Siebert ended the day commenting on how hard teachers work handling 5
classes every day. “The kids were great and asked excellent
questions. And I take my hat off to teachers who do this every day.”
