We discussed this briefly at today's (Tuesday) SRTC meeting and agreed that we would like to pursue this at a future meeting (May/June [at the latest]).

Here are some thoughts to consider:
  • Treat this as a cookout and a fund raiser for our after-primary candidates. Invite all the candidates (need to decide this quickly [May and at the latest June] since after the primary the candidate's schedule will fill up). Perhaps the date would be Saturday Sept. 18th or 25th.?
  • We would use the new Stow recreation center to hold the event. Lot's of room for parking and lots of room on the field - and, hopefully at minimal (or no) cost. Also, they have an overhang for the  grills in case it rains.
  • We need a good turnout of not only the GOP, but Independents (perhaps even inviting Dems?). My original idea is to specifically inviting Stow Independents, who won the election for Scott Brown. How might we do that?
  • How might we fund that? We don't have enough in our SRTC treasury to fund this. We need to work on this. Perhaps we ask GOP members to pay the freight? Or, get enough activities for adults/kids of Independents (bands, ball games, etc.) to get them to pay for an outing for the whole family? Hopefully, we can get enough volunteers to do all the work for free (trucks to get the grills, cooking, cleanups, etc.)? With enough volunteers, we could get by cheaply (rent grills, pay for COSTCO hamburgers and hot dogs,  volunteer cooks, etc.).
  • We should probably make this an adjoining Town event (invite Hudson, Maynard, Bolton, Acton, RTCs, etc. to participate with us.) It would help build the crowd and get a lot more volunteers and monies to help pull this off (and also get the candidates to appear).
Let's discuss this via Email before the May 4th meeting.

Overall, this is an excellent idea. Especially, inviting the neighboring RTC's. I can't help out with the organizing but I'd be glad to help at the event. I have some grilling experience at large events.

Targeting INDEPENDENTS (unenrolled) like myself is a good approach. The hardest part will be getting the word out thru local media, print, TV and Radio. (Inviting sympathetic talk radio hosts would be a major draw, eg. Michael Graham, Michelle McFee, etc).

Hey Fred and Jack,

If this function goes big you will swamp tha parking at Stow Community Park (SCP) . We cannot do parking on Old Bolton Road. That's the deal

If it is small enough.we can fit it. If it gets too big then Nyra Park in Acton is a much better venue. They have huge parking and space.

Stow Community Park could handle maybe two towns 100 cars +/- and even that would blow out the pavilion.

Think white open tents to augment seating. The Pavilion at SCP will have complete nice table coverage within a couple of weeks for you all to look at.

Thanks,
