Would just like to highlight the Google Apps Education Edition,
http://google.com/a/edu - which is available free to schools across
the world, yes that includes the UK!

It has provided us with the impetus and tools to renew our email,
calendaring, search and document sharing systems - each of the staff
now have an account allowing them to communicate and collaborate
easily and effectively.

It's fun seeing teachers excited by "old" technology such as email and
chat :)

It was easy to set up, is customisable and powerful.

The only downside is that some features you get in a regular Google
account (such as Groups & Maps membership) aren't available yet, and
some features (such as hared address books) are only available in the
English US interface.

For full details, and better testimonials than this visit, http://google.com/a/edu

It has enthused me! Next up, 1000 student accounts :)

Hi all

Just to back this up....

We are a medium sized secondary school and changed last year to Google
Apps.

We had the whole thing set up in less than a week (total man hours
about 6 hours to set up spread across a week)

We have 1050 registered users of which 617 is the maximum that have
used it in a 1 week period.

It has completely transformed the way we communicate in the school for
the following reasons.

1. Staff, students and admin staff have confidence in it.
2. It is ultra reliable
3. Students use it and read their mail on it.
4. There is no outside interference.
5. There are no arbitrary and restrictive limits on space or
attachment size
6. It does everything outlook and exchange does and its free.
7. It really is free.

See you all on board :-)

Thanks for that

I'd be interested to know what you replaced - I can imagine you'd have
been able to let go of a whole raft of things that take up time and
effort and concentrate on just using them - is there a big uptake from
students and staff for Blogger? Are you running it alongside some VLE
like Moodle?

I'd also be keen to know more about whether students use things like
mobile gmail with their own phones etc

My interest is that I work at the SSAT and am always looking for good
case studies!

Cheers

Guy

Sorry for the long delay in answering!

We are running it alongside moodle - in fact I have been inviting
other schools to contact me to discuss how it is all working
(especially with OCR Nationals in ICT).

We haven't fully explored the options for blogger or mobile email
etc. At the moment the key thing is that we have a reliable service
for the basics.

We have recently taken place in a case study for google. We would be
delighted to discuss something similar for SSAT (we are a Maths,
computing and vocational high performing specialist school).
