View Google Transit Routes?

Is there a way to simply view all/some transit routes on the map in
view? That way I could see and decide the best route instead of
relying on the transit planner (which can be hit/miss). I am a
frequent transit user in Los Angeles, and I find that a specific door-
to-door query is not always how I use transit. A more common question
is, "Which lines run along Alameda St?" That way I can just catch the
next bus that is headed towards my destination, instead of trying to
catch a specific bus line at a specific time/place because it meets
the exact conditions of my transit planner request. There is a large
disparity in the quality of bus lines (certain lines run more often,
are less crowded, smell better, are more punctual). This is not
necessarily captured in the Google Transit Feed.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

We don't yet have the transit layer enabled in the Los Angeles area,
but there are other ways to see what routes serve an area. First, if
you're looking up a particular business and you click "More info", the
place page shows the closest transit stop and the routes that serve
it--for example:
http://maps.google.com/places/us/los-angeles/los-feliz-blvd/4500/-the-derby

You can also click on any stop on the map to see the routes that serve
it, along with the next few scheduled departures:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&sll=34.081817,-118.270609&sspn=0.070998,0.064619&ie=UTF8&view=map&ved=0CBIQpQY&hnear=&ll=34.108465,-118.276491&spn=0.005357,0.010546&z=17&iwloc=lyrftr:m,0x80c2c0b7a805ee0b:0xeceb9f931b977705,34.108376,-118.278991

Hope this helps,
Joe Hughes

Hi Joe,

I have a similiar question. Can we show all bus routes and bus stops
of a city on the Google Map?

I have already got google transit feed files of my city. Actually I am
not going to do a travel plan. What I need to do is to show all the
information of public transportation on map to undertake
transportation study. Can you tell me how to do that? Thank you.

What you can try:
1. Download the transitfeed package here:
http://code.google.com/p/googletransitdatafeed/downloads/list
It contains a program called kmlwriter.exe
2. Use kmlwriter to generate a KML file from the GTFS data.
3. Import the resulting KML into Google Maps or Google Earth, voila.

Good Morning Group,

Over a year ago the director of our transit agency asked that we try and put
together the data to get our agency listed on Google Transit after receiving
requests from our riders and I attempted to begin the process.

Back in March 2009 we received the following as part of an email:

>>>>>Thank you for your continued interest in the Google Transit Partner
>>>>>Program - Although unfortunately we cannot launch you today, we will be
>>>>>back in touch with you around May to notify you of the progress.

So far it seems we are just waiting as we have not been updated on any
progress.

Every so often I ask the question " Where do we stand" ? .

Am I wasting our time? Are we climbing up a list somewhere or am I missing
some important step?

Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your continued interest in Google Maps. We will be
delighted to have you on Google Maps.

We have been working on a new data submission tool, and have several
agencies pilot it. The result is promising.
We hope to make this available to all agencies early 2010.

In the mean while, please prepare your feed according to information
posted on http://www.google.com/transitpartners.
Once your feed is created, passed feed validator, and QA'd against
schedule viewer, please contact us by using the Contact Us form on the
site above and note that you are ready to submit.

In the mean while, please apply for a membership to the Google Transit
Partner Support group (http://groups.google.com/group/google-transit-
partner-support) which is created for agencies to share their know-how
and help each other.

Best,

Jessica Wei

Hi Jessica,

I think have or had the information needed last summer, looked good in the
feed validator, looked good in the schedule viewer, of course some info may
well have changed by this point.

This was the answer I received last July after attempting to provide the
information:

>>>Although unfortunately we cannot launch you today, we will be back in
>>>touch with you shortly to notify you of the progress.

Still waiting for that person to "notify me of the progress".

I can update our feed information to be sure it is current, but it not
productive for me to spend time that way unless we will actually be able to
proceed before the information is out of date.

I do also receive email [am a member] from the Google Transit Partner
Support group, but it's not too useful until such time as we can move ahead
and attempt to offer our information to Google Maps.

Thanks for your continued assistance.

Jim

I'm glad to see the Appalcart working so hard to get into Google Maps.
I live in Boone and have sent a few e-mails asking about how the
Appalcart routes can be listed. I even thought I might try to put
together route maps by riding around and marking the stops. Thanks for
working so hard Jim! I just wanted to voice my support. If the winter
keeps going like this, the ability to search for walking directions
and find just the right routes and transfers would be so helpful in
keeping warm and well. It's been staying below freezing with wind
chill below zero almost every day. In case Google isn't aware,
Appalcart provides rides for students, residents, professionals,
elderly, and disabled around town free of charge! Many of the buses
run on bio-diesel that is produced by Appalachian State University as
part of research in biofuels. It's evident as a rider that they are
constantly working to improve in every area. I got a detailed survey a
month or too ago from Appalcart looking for ways to make it better/
easier/more efficient to ride. Appalcart is a great small town
commuting system. I hope Google will recognize how, with the system of
multiple routes that Appalcart offers combined with a unique
topography of Boone, this is a great place to further beta test
projects with walking/transit route efficiency. Please include us
soon! I'd be happy to offer feedback about transit and directions on
the Motorola Droid around Boone.
