Filter by Email Issue for Student Accounts

Hi all, 

I created a Google Data Studio dashboard where students can access their own data (e.g. attendance, grades, assessment results, etc) for upcoming student-led conferences. I was trying to use the Filter By Email Address feature that uses the account they're logged into and matches it to an email address in the underlying data source. I tested it for my account and a couple of other staff members' accounts using dummy data and it works fine, but when students try to access it, it shows "no data" even after they click the "allow" button giving consent to GDS to access their email address. I've double checked and confirmed that matching email addresses exist in the underlying data, so I'm thinking there must be some kind of extra security feature for student accounts that's preventing GDS from fully accessing their account info.

Has anyone else run into a similar issue with student accounts?  I've reached out to our IT to see if they have any idea why this might be happening, but we're trying to figure out a solution sooner rather than later so I wanted to check with this group as well.

We haven't used this feature for student emails but these are the most common issues we've seen.

1. Spaces:

-Depending on where your emails are coming from there could be hidden spaces. We always use "trim(originalemail-variable) as Email" and filter by email on the newly created Email variable. 

2. Users not logged into the correct account. 

-If they are using shared machines another user might be the

My workaround is to wrap @DS_USER_EMAIL in LOWER() in a custom SQL query.

I will echo Marcos on case sensitivity, I will add a Lower() formula to create a custom field in Data Studio for the student email, and that helps with the case sensitivity as well.

Got it working! Case sensitivity was indeed the issue. Though I didn't find any whitespaces, I also added TRIM() for good measure. Thank you all for the quick helpful responses!

Glad to hear you got it worked out Brett. We also ran into the same issues with legacy emails and case sensitivity. I also use the LOWER() function to tackle this. In addition, I put in a ticket with HR to clean those up in our SIS, so that has helped as well.
