Current Enrollment

Hi all,

Nice to write for the first time. Happy to have this community! 

I am new to GDS and wondering if someone can help me figure out how to write a formula to create a current student enrollment dimension?

I have a large dataset with all entry and exit dates attached. Students with no exit date are current students.

The code I tried was:

CASE

When Exit Date = DATE(' ') then 1

Else 0

END

However, it told me ' ' is not a valid date. So, then I duplicated the field, made the date into plain text, and tried:

CASE

When Exit Date = DATE('') then 1

Else 0

END

This formula did not return any errors, but when I tried to sum "current enrollment" on a scorecard, I kept getting 0. Any ideas?

Hi Janelle, 

It sounds like the Exit Date field is null/blank for current students. If so, try the following: 

CASE

WHEN Exit Date IS NULL THEN 1

ELSE 0

END

Just a side note that you can also use IF since there are just two outcomes. 

IF (Exit Date IS NULL, 1, 0)

Data Studio didn’t always support IF so those of us who have been using it a while tend to use CASE out of habit. I’ve been trying to get myself to use IF where possible for simplicity!

Great tip on IF; that's a lot less typing.  I'll go see for myself if it supports nested IF - that was my jam when I was doing all of this in excel, lol.
