Hello,

I know how to add a filter to a bar chart to include/exclude data based on other responses but is there a way to allow views of a GDS report to turn these filters on/off for themselves?

In my specific case, we asked the following separate questions in a Google Form survey:
  • Will you have a student at the high school next year?

  • Will you have a student at the middle school next year?
  • Will you have a student at the elementary school next year?
My filter excludes middle and elementary and displays only those responses for parents that only have a child at the high school. I would like viewers of the report to be able to toggle this filter on/off for themselves.

Seems like it should be doable but I have no clue how to make it happen

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Drop downs work great. I use them all the time. Another suggestion would be to use a Fixed List. This way, users could see all the options and select multiple options as well.

Of course, I'm very familiar with drop-down filters. However, since these are three separate questions, I think I would need to add three drop-down filters. Then, if viewers of the report want to filter based on respondents that only have students at the high school they would have to set each individual filter to:
  • Filter 1: I have a high school student --> Yes
  • Filter 2: I have a middle school student --> No
  • Filter 3: I have an elementary student --> No
This would be confusing for the viewer and I'm wondering if there is a way to create a single filter users can manipulate called 'I only have a high school student'.

I hope that clarifies things.

Steve,

If you have three fields: HS, MS, ES you could use them to create a combination calculated field...something like this:

case
when HS="Yes" and MS="No" and ES="No" then "High School Only"
when HS="Yes" and MS="Yes" and ES="No" then "Middle School Only"
....(whatever additional combinations you want)
end

Then, you could use this field for a drop-down filter for the user. Is that along the lines of what you were trying to do?

And this thread gave me a new idea for a project I’m working on. I just put the new field together based on Laura’s example and it works perfectly.

Appreciate the knowledge and sharing through the group.

I agree! I figured a calculated field would solve the problem...just couldn't figure out how to set it up.

Steve, I just realized that I left the "Yes" in for HS (should have been "No") on the second WHEN line of the CASE statement, which was obviously incorrect since that line was for MS only. I think you probably figured that out, but I just wanted to clarify for Ben or anyone else who is looking at this statement.

Thank you Laura. I did figure that out and wrote the case statement this way:

These represent the three scenarios I was most interested in.
