Nunito now has only a weight axis. To enlarge the typographic palette, a narrow and a Slant variant will be added for all weights. The current Nunito will be one extreme.

The development of the width axe has been assigned to Sabina Kipara.

First step of the process was to evaluate if a thinner /n stroke would match better the grey of the romans. The angle was set to 5° and different weights were tested ExtraLight: 42, 38, 36 and Heavy 208, 188, 178 an approximate of 0.1% and 0.15% thinner that the current stroke weights. For the ExtraLight version the lighter tests seem too light so the initial 42 units of /n stem was considered to be the best. As to Heavy all the testes versions seem too light so more testes were needed for a better conclusion.

This was a fast test, minimal optical corrections were applied to the slanted letters.

Since the 208 units for the /n stroke was too heavy for the italics compared to the romans we tried 200 units as previous thinner test were too thin.

Same spacing and kerning were kept for both Extra Light and Heavy as the new Romans that Jacques designed.
In this version of heavy more optical corrections were applied to the n and o.

During this step a new idea came up and that was to try a steeper angle. Barbara suggested that the slant angle can increase together with the size – the smaller the steeper.
Next more test were made in order to chose the best angle fitting the personality of Nunito.

The first variation of angles were 5°, 9° and 12°. They were compared with the work in progress update for Nunito but also with the original files.
12° seem too steep and we decided to also try the original Nunito angle 4.5 and a new 10°. The 9° angle was preferred as an new extreme but we wanted to compare if 10° could also be an option that we did not consider.

All results were compared and analyzed. The best extreme angle solution was 9°. So now on the axis Nunito will slat from 0° to 9° and the original 4.5° will be an instance.
It was time to start the optical corrections for the basic A-Z and a-z characters.

First trial of optical corrections. After discussing the result with Jacques he sketched new corrected lowercase: /d /o/ e /n /p in both ExtraLight and Heavy weights.

We also discussed his strategy of correcting the lowercase /o.

Jacques' file set the base for new corrections that involved both lowercase and uppercase. This step was evaluated by Barbara.
All corrections are compared with the work in progress Nunito file designed by Jacques.

Here are Barbara's comments regarding this stage:

• There is a tiny bit too much weight in some places on the outside curves (it might just be slightly off points placement): for example on /u.
• On the other hand shoulder of /n/m (and same but rotated in /u) looks a bit thinner than the more horizontal / vertical.
• In general (I think) connections of curves to the stem could be a hair thinner for all (/a/b/n/h/g/r/u….).
• The top of /f looks like it has too much tension between the handles on the outer stroke (the same thing as in bowl of /a — strokes are not parallel)
• Terminals on /a /e look thicker than curves.

• x could have a nicer middle and corrected contrast, /y also could use a weight correction
Same goes for Heavy and uc / lc XxYyKk

Following Barbara's comments and suggestion more corrections were made including the uppercase.
As she also suggested that the /t could be slanted more the same idea was applied to the f for both weights.

Specific glyphs need more attention following Jacques' comments.

• Lowercase a looks like it is being pulled apart. The eye looks almost upright.
lowercase /b red: this looks bumpy and not fluid. Blue: optically both connections should have the same strength/weight.

• lowercase /c: top looks quite flat, should close the counter more

lowercase /d top is more “flat” than bottom. Bottom looks too sharp.

round stroke is too heavy and not nice, maybe you should start the curve higher ?

lowercase /e top is optically too heavy (right) and not symmetrical. Bottom left looks too light. In all pretty square
lowercase /n vert extreme should be more to the right
lowercase /t Heavy inner stroke isn’t fluid. Bottom: extreme more to the left

Comparing /o and /u, in the slanted the /o looks more heavy

More updates following soon.

Thank you!

After a meeting with Jacques we decided that keeping the same width of the glyphs Slanted vs Roman was very important. Also the lowercase Heavy /o needed a special attention as it looked thicker compared to the roman.
More proofs were made to compare different options for the Heavy weight by making the lowercase /o thinner in comparison to the Roman. Also comparing how the side bearing differ.

A new check was also dedicated to the diagonal strokes that needed more optical adjustments.

In the next version the balance of the /o was made more considering the weight distribution than making the stroke thinner.
However more polishing is needed in order to match better the angle of the Heavy lowercase rounds in comparison with the designated 9° angle for the Italic weights.

Specific glyphs inclinations will be adjusted in the next update.

New updates on the Slant Axis:
All characters apart from Cyrillic have been corrected A-Z, a-z numbers.

Further more the currencies, symbols, math and accents have also been optically corrected.

Future step will be to recheck glyph compatibility and optically correct the Cyrillic.
More updates soon, thank you!

Slowly but steady the Slant axis is getting finished. This is the last update before introducing the M500 master and checking if any distortion appears.
This will mean an extra check-up for the M0 and M 1000 masters.

The PDFs contain:
• A glyph comparison between all masters (Roman & Slant)
• Language samples of all masters (Roman & Slant)
• Comparative spacing of Latin, Cyrillic and Numbers (Roman & Slant)
• Last but not least comparison between currency + symbols (Roman & Slant)

Hi all,

This is a PDF featuring a Glyph Comparison between the last Base file and the Slant now containing the  the M500 (Regular Master).
Some final details must be checked and then everything will be ready!

The two axes are now part of a bigger Glyphs file containing all the other axis we have been working on for Nunito VF.
More testing are now being made to make sure everything will work smoothly.

Enjoy!
