When I try to use googlecl I always get a grep error message (see below)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. run googlecl (no matter what arguments/options used output still the
same)

What do you see instead?
grep: invalid UTF-8 byte sequence in input

What version of the product are you using? 0.9.14
On what operating system? Linux
What version of gdata-python-client (aka python-gdata)? 2.0.18

Additional information:
python --version
Python 2.7.7

echo $LANG
en_US.UTF-8

I get a similar error on OSX 10.9.5 (installed googlecl via homebrew):
$ google help
usage: grep [-abcDEFGHhIiJLlmnOoPqRSsUVvwxZ] [-A num] [-B num] [-C[num]]
[-e pattern] [-f file] [--binary-files=value] [--color=when]
[--context[=num]] [--directories=action] [--label] [--line-buffered]
[--null] [pattern] [file ...]
