trouble clicking links thru gtalk

i've used gtalk for a couple years now, now lately
1.i dont seem to be able to click the 'mail' link thru gtalk to access
my gmail...
2. i've tried the 'help' button and that doesnt work,
3. i've tried opening links sent by other friends on my contact list
and that doesnt work....
4. i've also tried to paste things from gmail to my gtalk and that
doesnt work

my operating system is home vista, have been using it for half a year
and have not had any problems with gtalk until a week ago...i hope it
is not due to one of the google updates...
no point having easy access to mail when the links are defunct:(
things done to rectify:
1. made sure under setting the box labeled 'open gmail when i click on
email links' is checked
2. i uninstalled and reinstalled gtalk
no luck please help anyone....
