I have a clean install of Eclipse ( 3.6.2 Build M20110210-1200) on a
clean Windows Vista machine with AMD Phenom 9550 processor and 8 GB of
memory and tons of disk space.
I have tried to to install the GWT using http://dl.google.com/eclipse/plugin/3.6
as well as http://dl.google.com/eclipse/plugin/beta/3.6 with the
following result
Cannot complete the install because one or more required items
could not be found.
Software being installed: Google Plugin for Eclipse 3.6
2.3.1.r36v201105191508

I also downloaded the zip file and unzipped it with WINZip and pointed
the Eclipse installer to the unzipped folder as per the instructions
with the following results
Could not find file:/File:/C:/Users/John/Downloads/gwt-2.3.0/
gwt-2.3.0/

I have searched far and wide and can not find any solutions. Is there
a list of required items somewhere?

Any help would be appreciated as I really would like to use the Google
tools and cloud.

Thanks

hi jrmore,

i am also using eclipse helios. what i did is i did not unzip the zip
file. i just go to Help -> Install New Software -> Click the Add
button -> put a name on the text field(Example: GWT Plugin) and click
on the Archive button -> locate the zip file -> click Ok button -> and
select all the stuff you want to install. that's it. just read and
follow whatever pops up on your screen during installation

Thanks Brip.

This is very frustrating. I tried what you suggested and in the archive location I end up with
"jar:file/C:/Users/John/Downloads/gwt-2.3.0.zip!/" and when I try to use the location the install package says
"Could not find jar:file/C:/Users/John/Downloads/gwt-2.3.0.zip!/"

This should not be so difficult. Do you know if there is a list of the required items that should be on the download site?

Thanks again for trying to help.

Something's abnormal here. The plugin installation automatically finds all the jars it needs. Which items couldn't be found when you tried to install via the Eclipse update site?

John,

The most recent error message you posted indicates you may have downloaded the GWT SDK zipfile, not the zipfile that contains the Google Plugin for Eclipse (GPE) update site archive (which repackages the GWT and GAE SDKs as additional resources).

You can find the links for the GPE updatesite archive downloads here:

With regards to your first post, there's not enough information to tell what the specific problem with the remote update site was.  However, its worth noting that eclipse itself has been observed to have issues with pulling down invalid and/or partial metadata in the face of network issues.  It's worth trying to update directly from the public update site URL again, as GPE is able to identify when new versions of components are available when installed via that mechanism.  Enough time has passed that any metadata that's been cached should be invalidated.

David,

I do not know which items could not be found as it the install function simply reports "Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found."

Thanks

Seth,

Thanks.. You were right about the wrong zip file. (Too many acronyms) I did download from the link you suggested and this time the install function detected the availability. However I still end up with a report stating that required items could not be found. I tried installing just the GWT as well and this did not work.
On the issue of network problems I am using an unlimited version of Verizon FIOS and never had any problems with the network ( I day trade extensively and download large files quite often) I have stopped and started the computer many times and nothing seems to change the scenario.

At this point I am thinking there must be something wrong with Eclipse and I will try a re install to see if I can get a different result.

Thanks again.

Hurm.

You don't happen to have either some kind of network proxy, host-based firewall, or antivirus software that might be interfering with eclipse's attempts to communicate with the network, would you?  Also, what version of Eclipse are you working with?  Depending on the version you're using it may be missing a core component/feature that GPE itself depends on, hence the problem with missing requirements.

Just to see what I'm talking about, here's the standard Eclipse distro comparison matrix:

Seth,
I am using Version: Helios Service Release 2 Build id: 20110218-0911.

I am really bummed now. I have another computer that I use solely for my day trading. It is a very capable HP with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 GHz with 8 GB of ram and more disk space then I will ever use. So I loaded the JDK, Eclipse and tried to install the GPE from the update site and a local download. Exact same problem. I do not have a proxy running and I disabled the firewall completely. No Luck. I tried running eclipse as administrator. No difference. I hate to give up on this but I really don't know what to try next.
Thanks for your assistance.

Another option for diagnosis would be to take a look at your eclipse log in and see if it has any additional information which might shed light on the matter.  It's usually found as <workspace directory>/.metadata/.log

Seth,

Your hint was right. there is a problem noted in the log (see Below) and although there is a lot of posts concerning this on Eclipse etc. there is no solution that I have been able to find.
Once again your assistance is deeply appreciated.

Thanks

Strange. The unresolved org.eclipse.jst.server.core plugin appears to be part of WTP, which should get picked up through the default defined update sites in a fresh eclipse install. Could you confirm which distro/packaging of eclipse you downloaded (different than the Helios identifier you listed earlier)?

I'd also be interested in seeing what the "available software sites" list looks like on your eclipse install. It's available through the preferences, or should be a reference to it from the "install new software" menu as well.

Seth,

The distro/packaging I had initially downloaded was Eclipse IDE for Java Developers.  There were no sites in the available software sites.

Your questions led me to download  Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers . Again there were no sites in the available software sites. However on checking the "Already Installed List" the missing plugin was there and I was able to install the GPE from the zip file and the designer from the update site. I can now move on and try to automate a bunch of spreadsheets that I have in google docs. I would be interested in knowing why the first distro did not include the required plugin if you know or if there are some instructions that I missed.

Again thanks for your help. For someone who left coding (Pascal Fortran and C, {compile -> assemble -> link}) to move to management and now retired this new world is certainly different, but; I am sure the juices will once again flow and the excitement of discovery will be very rewarding.

John
