Colour zones in area chart.

I use area chart to display heart rate graphics.

How can i split background into several colour zones like on screen attached? Is the workaround in area chart or some other chart type?

Use a ComboChart with "area" series to represent the colored bands.  See an example here: http://jsfiddle.net/asgallant/apH2B/

Killer example. How would I do this very same thing with vertical bands along the x-axis?

It's harder to do along the x-axis, but I wrote a hack that accomplishes it: http://jsfiddle.net/asgallant/KJavc/

This is one of the most kludgy hacks I've put together, and I would love to be able to simplify it, but I'm not sure there is anything that can be done to make it simpler.
