Paragraph 8.2 of Terms of Use states that:

8.2 You may not (and you may not permit anyone else to) copy, modify,
create a derivative work of, reverse engineer, decompile or otherwise
attempt to extract the source code of the Services or Software or any
part thereof, unless this is expressly permitted or required by law,
or unless you have been specifically told that you may do so by
Google, in writing (e.g., through an open source software license).

However I would like to confirm whether keeping a local copy, only for
internal use (no distribution, no sell), is considered a "copy" by the
definition of the above text. That is, is it legal to keep a copy on
my local server and serve those files to local clients (inside the
same company) ?

Best regards,
Igor.

Hi Igor,

According to our current Terms of Service you cannot make a local copy. You need to upload the API over the web from Google.
Unless you are looking at working offline, this should not be a problem.

If you are looking for a client/offline visualization solution, we cannot give you a solution based on this API at this point in time. We have received this request before and are looking at ways to make it available in offline situations as well, but these too will still be web-centric (a-la Google Gears).

I suppose you meant "download" right ?

Yes I am looking for an offline solution. I don't need to modify/
reverse engineer anything. I just can't rely on our link to the
internet been up to have our systems working. Technically speaking it
is perfectly possible (and easy to do) to mirror those few JS on a
local machine so we don't need to go to the internet to have the
graphics working. My concern is whether it is allowed or not.

Even though the terms of use (quoted on the last message) seems to
forbid the copy of those files, I would assume it is legal to have a
"mirror" of them, otherwise it would make impossible the use of Google
Viz Library on systems behind a proxy with cache enabled (or even
local cache enabled).

Best Regards,
Igor.

yes, obviously it is very easy technically, but our terms do not allow it.

caching is perfectly fine and allowed, but making local copies to negate the need for a web connection is not caching and unfortunately not allowed by the Terms at this time.

Best Regards,
Igor.
