The way to handle this depends on what kind of axis you are using.  If you have a discrete axis (ie, the axis column in the data table is type "string"), set the hAxis.showTextEvery option to something other than 1 (setting it to 2 would show every other label, 3 would show every third label, etc).  If you have a continuous axis (ie, axis column is type "number", "date", or "datetime"), it is a bit more complicated: you will have to play with the hAxis.maxAlternation, hAxis.maxTextLines, and hAxis.minTextSpacing to find some combination that works for you.
