What is the smoothing algorithm used in "smooth line chart"?

Hi!
I am looking for the exact smoothing algorithm used in the Sheets line chart.
The answer from this forum post leads to the CurveStyle SMOOTH enum but the algorithm remains hidden.
The stackexchange discussion on the topic (linked in the mentioned forum post) has what looks like a good guess, however I'd like more certainty.
In case anyone is wondering, the reason for this search is purely academic. Because of this I suppose a good data set that helps prove that the algorithm is one and not another would work too. How would one go about creating such a set if no solid answer is found?
