What is the difference between geomap and geochart?

Geochart seems to load asynchronously whereas geomap loads all at
once. Is there a way to load geomap in a similar way as geochart?

From what I know, GeoMap uses Flash and is the older version of
GeoChart. GeoChart uses SVG instead of Flash.

There are only a handful of things you can do with the (old) geomaps that you can't do with the (new) geocharts. If you don't need any of those features, then it is generally recommended that you use the geocharts instead.
