We have a new release available for testing.

Note, while the official docs say version = 1, since this is in testing, you must use version 1.1.
More info here and here.

The primary feature we'd like to announce in this release is the Timeline chart.

timeline is a chart that depicts how a set of resources are used over time. If you're managing a software project and want to illustrate who is doing what and when, or if you're organizing a conference and need to schedule meeting rooms, a timeline is often a reasonable visualization choice.

Examples and all the options are available here:

This new chart type was announced at Google I/O.

If you missed it, you can check out the video or see the slides here:

(Note: to navigate through the slides, use the arrow keys. The slides are HTML so that the charts are interactive)

Try it out and let us know what you think!

Timeline is great!

Is it too early to suggest a new feature? :P
I believe this one is easy. It would be great if there was an option to choose manually the interval of the timeline, that is, a custom start time and end time.

For example, an application that displays a timeline of when a feature is running on a server. The timeline automatically adjusts its interval from the oldest start time to the most recent end time, but I want the timeline to show up to the current time, even if there is no event registered, so that it is clear that nothing is running after the last date until now. For that, I could set a custom beginning and end time, according to the interval I want to analyze.

Thanks!

Something like the hAxis.minValue/maxValue/viewWindow options would be nice.  Those would open the door to using controls to pan and zoom the timeline ala ChartRangeFilter.

I am currently testing out this great new feature but i am already running into a problem. The timeline chart tooltips don't seem to work in Internet Explorer. A quick fix would be to extend the API with a option to turn of the tooltip (and of course fixing the problem altogether ;-)).

I posted an issue in the issue tracker.

starred ;)

Another issue that I find with Timeline chart is the Locale feature.
Seems ignore my setting in google.load() method. But, perhaps, I
missing something.

Hello,

Is it possible to use datetime for the Timeline chart as opposed to either the date or time being shown. If this is not possible could I request this as a feature?

Regards,
Jesse Fletcher.

The timelines already work with the "datetime" data type.

Datetime is not listed as a data type for Timeline charts. Datetime is a data type for annotated timeline charts although. I am referring to this chart: https://developers.google.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery/timeline

If I insert for example this data:
new Date(2013,6,12,14,30,0)

Only the time is shown and not the date.

Regards,
Jesse.

Yes, I knew what you were referring to, and the problem you are having is a formatting issue, not a lack of support for "datetime" data type.  According to the documentation, there is no way to format the axis labels, and there definitely should be an option to do so.  You can make a feature request to add support for this here.

Hey,

I'm trying to use the timeline chart, and specifically I'm interested in displaying data with no end time (i.e just points in the timeline without duration).
I couldn't find any info about it in the documentation (https://developers.google.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery/timeline), but it is mentioned and used in the video and slides from Google I/O (https://developers.google.com/events/io/sessions/401719292).

Is there any more info about this feature? Does it really exist?

Thanks

Hi, I'm not entirely what you're looking for, or how it was used in the presentation. Can you point to a specific time in the video or a specific slide?

I believe that what you want to do can be achieved by specifying nulls for the end date values, but that doesn't work when you don't have any end dates, since that makes it difficult for the chart to figure out its ranges. You could also achieve this by specifying the same date for the end date as you do for the start date.

I was referring to slide 22 in the presentation (http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/io-2013/presentations/1214-google-visualization-api/io/index.html#22), which didn't seem to work for me (just copy pasted the example).
Anyway, setting the same date for the end date and the start date did the work.
Thanks Sergey!

Hi, you are correct that that code doesn't really work. The number of columns in some of the rows simply doesn't match up with the number of columns in the table. That's our bad. I'm glad that you got it to work, however.
