Hello,

Recently we found than an old javascript report with Google Charts, GeoMaps, markers and city names its not working anymore because we are not using a mapsApiKey.

We are thinking about restore this report but it is not clear for us if this key has any cost and how much it could be.

Apparently the markers work fine if we pass lat/lng values, but it fail when we want pass a city. Could be because some was transformation in lat/lng by Google Maps?

Thanks

First, the geomap chart is fairly obsolete because it is flash-based.  If you can switch to GeoChart, we'll be able to better support you in the long run.

We'd actually like to automatically replace the geomap chart with a wrapper around the GeoChart, similar to how we replaced the AnnotatedTimeline chart with the AnnotationChart.  I don't know when we will have time to do that, however.

Regarding the mapsApiKey, this comes into play when using geocoding services, such as when a name for a place is looked up.  So you can avoid using this service by using lat-long locations.  Without your own mapsApiKey, you will get some modest amount of service, but depending on the overall load on the service globally, you will eventually be throttled down.

If you register your own mapsApiKey, then I believe you get some amount of service for free, but don't hold me to that.

Thank you very much,

It is a GeoChart, my mistake, sorry about that.
About mapsApiKey, we are dimensionating our service and studing the options.

Thank you for the info.
