Geo Chart metropolitan resolution is broken

The problem is with Geo Chart https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery/geochart

US metropolitan areas stopped working on Jan 7, 2013.
It worked until then with "region:us_metro", which now requests the following bad/missing URL:
http://www.gstatic.com/charts/geomap/3//geodata/us_metro_COUNTRIES.xml

I can see that the API has changed and region:US + resolution:metros  is the new way of getting metropolitan layout, BUT that does not work either.
It fails when not finding http://www.gstatic.com/charts/geomap/3//geodata/US_metros.xml

Please recover one or both of these files so that the US metropolitan layout is functional again.
