Removing some x axis labels

I have a line chart that plots some counts by date with each individual date being a label on the x axis.  I would like to hide all but the first and last x-axis labels but keep the actual data values in the chart so that the tooltips still include the dates.

Is this possible and if so, any suggestions as to how to achieve it would be most welcome.
