Hello.  I noticed that gadgets are being deprecated   Without gadgets, what is the recommended way to retrieve a "query data source URL" to use as a Google Charts data source?  This documentation:

instructs the user to temporarily install a gadget in order to retrieve the URL.  Once gadgets are gone, what is the best way to accomplish the same goal?

Thank you!

What you actually need from the gadget is the key to your spreadsheet, which is in the spreadsheet's URL; using a gadget is a wholly unnecessary extra step.  As an example, to query this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiFfbdok-kQKcENRYmV0ZC1DcHRHWHh4UUlHN1ZGSVE#gid=0, you pull out the "key" parameter ("pCQbetd-CptGXxxQIG7VFIQ" in this case) and plug it into the data query url (http://spreadsheets.google.com/tq?key=<key here>).  In this example, you would have a url that looks like this: https://spreadsheets.google.com/tq?key=pCQbetd-CptGXxxQIG7VFIQ.  You don't need to use a gadget at all.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I have an obvious question.   In asgallant's answer, the example URL given is:

but then he says the "key" parameter from that URL is:
pCQbetd-CptGXxxQIG7VFIQ

However, I don't see the string "pCQbetd-CptGXxxQIG7VFIQ" anywhere in the key=<string>  part of the original URL.
Rather, I see:

What am I missing?

Sorry, I screwed up that post.  The key for that spreadsheet is "0AiFfbdok-kQKcENRYmV0ZC1DcHRHWHh4UUlHN1ZGSVE".  I think I used two different sources when putting that post together, and apparently didn't reconcile them.

Here's a little more info on using Spreadsheets as a DataSource URL:
