Hello there, My name is Akash Agrawal. I am a student from India. I am doing my masters from an open university. Somebody answer these questions for me.

How much do we need to have knowledge about programming when participating in GSoC? I have exposure to C/C++, Core Java and Python. I suppose it is not sufficient enough to make an open source project. What are the exact skills do we require to make an open source project? whats the level of proficiency required in a computer language to bag this internship? I suppose we still have 2 months before we start making proposals? what can we do in the meanwhile to improve our chances of getting accepted and how to choose what project you want to work on? Somebody who has already done this please answer my questions

Thanks,
Akash

Hi there!
This article / book should tell you what you need to know:
http://www.booki.cc/gsocstudentguide/am-i-good-enough/

As for what you can do to increase your chances:
Look around in the past organization list, select an organization that works on things you like, and get in contact with their community.
Familiarize yourself with how they work, what tools they use, etc...

As an organization administrator, I can say that students who turn up now and get past the initial hurdles, prove their mettle, etc. are much more appealing than students who submit a proposal at the end of the application period.

When you interact with an organization for a while, you also will get a better feel for what kind of projects are available and what interests you. You may even think of something we haven't and that should make the project even more appealing to you.

Get involved early and stay involved afterwards.
