Hello!

My name is Matei, and I am a Romanian student at Middlebury College, USA on a F1 Visa.
I was wondering if, as the program is online, I would be able to work while spending the summer in Romania, in order to avoid applying the OPT! Would I still require OPT if working from Romania, and if I wouldn't, my school year starts 2 weeks before GSOC ends, would I be able to work from my college in the last two weeks without an OPT?

I'm not sure I know what an OPT is, but if it's anything like a CPT, we don't require you get a CPT to participate in GSoC. That's entirely between you and your university.

Cheers,

Hi Carol,

OPT is a benefit for F1 students in US to work in the state while
maintaining their F1 status.

I am also an international student in US right now and was planning to
get a CPT in order to participate in GSoC. But as you said, seems that
I actually don't need to acquire it at all?

I will provide you a CPT letter if you tell me you need one furnished to you. But if you don't ask for it, it won't be provided. Hope that helps.

Thanks,

Thanks for your reply. Just want to make sure that I don't need to get a CPT
to participate in GSoC as a F1 student, right?

If I remember correctly, the usual duration of CPT is like 12 weeks and I have
to go through a painful and slow process in order to extend it to fit into
GSoC's timing. If CPT is not required at all, I will just not apply for it :P

I don't know about your particular visa situation, so I can't speak to whether you need a CPT to be on an F1 visa in the US. But if you're asking if Google asks *you* for a CPT when you are accepted into GSoC, the answer is no. We require your tax forms and proof of enrollment in a university.

I see, it's clear for me now, thanks :)

Just in case other F1 students in US are still in doubt: Google does not
require CPT, but if you want to participate GSoC in US with F1 visa, you still
need to apply for CPT other wise you won't be eligible to work in the state.

I will just reply it to the group since it might be useful for other
f1 students ;p

Yes, if you are in f1 status, you have to either get OPT or CPT,
otherwise it's illegal for you to work in the state (you can work for
part time in campus though).

See if you can get OPT, or you can go back to your home country and
participate GSoC there so you can save your OPT for fulltime job
hunting after graduation.

That was my question, how would I make it work if I would want to go back to my country? How would I be employed?

I would recommend very strongly against getting legal advice like this on this mailing list. Please speak to a lawyer or a university advisor. There are legal and tax implications here that none of us can help you with ethically or legally.

Thanks,
