I am not a student, due to working conditions I've had to take up in
the past year, but I am still interested in participating in the
Google Summer of Code 2010. My aspirations are to become a software
engineer, after getting a computer science degree from UC Berkeley. I
am 18 years old, and an active PHP developer. Is there room for people
with my background, still interested taking part of the program?

I was off from school for a semester. I had the same problem. You have
to be a registered student as of a certain date (see the FAQ for this
date.)

You can still participate in OSS development outside of Summer of Code
-- and you SHOULD.

That said, LH will have to confirm, but based on my experience, you MUST
be a student.

That is correct, you must be a student. When we get the 2010 FAQs published, that date will be confirmed. As I mentioned previously on list [0], the FAQs are not yet ready to be published.

I'm graduating in april and the official calendar of my university
states that the semester ends on april 24.
So, if I can get a "transcripts or other documentation" that prove
that I was enrolled on april 24, does that means that I can
participate in GSoC even if I'm no longer a student?
If not, how can Google know that I'm cheating? :)

Thanks.

Yes, that's what it means. How are we going to know? We won't for sure, but we rely on people to be honest with us and to treat the program and their colleagues in the community with respect. And I can also say that the truth eventually comes out - it has in several cases where people were "cheating" or otherwise being untrustworthy in the past.

The amazing thing about Summer of Code is that it works so well across so many countries (more than a hundred now worldwide) with so many people (more than 5,000) participating, no contracts, no copyright assignments, etc. Yes we rely on people to be community members we can trust and you will find that the whole Open Source paradigm is built on trust: trust that you will not write malicious code (though there are code reviews and testing), trust not to mess with a part of the repository you ought not to when gaining commit rights, trust that you will not behave like an indecent jerk when attending a user conference or giving a talk about your project, etc.

So be worthy of that trust. Do the right thing, have fun and keep your karma clean.

Cheers,
LH

PS - It doesn't help your application to the program if you talk about cheating on a public list with over 7,000 subscribers. Just a thought.

No, because you are no longer a student.

Thanks for your quick reply and for the great "PS" that you left me.

You are right when you write about trust, it's an important part of
the open source community.
I will let real students do the job; they deserve it more than me.

Thanks again.

Hope this mail finds all of you in the very best of spirits.

I'm an engineering student from India, Kerala and am more than
enthusiastic to be participating in the Summer of Code programme this
year. I would like to know about the eligibility based on the
knowledge that people have. I mean that I am a person who has come to
the programming field just a year ago and have just started developing
that huge appetite for codes. C is my language of expertise and it is
the only tool that I have at my command right at the moment. But I'm
sure it'll be only a matter of time before I start into the 'open'
world. So, as I wish to be participating this year, what all steps can
I take as of from today?
Thanking you for your time and attention,
Yours sincerely,
Cyber Zep.
