Google / other organizations,

Do you have any suggestions for where to find opensource organizations looking for interns :) ? I'll turn 18 mid summer, so I can't apply for GSoc :(

Thank you,
Shomiron Ghose

If you're not 18 yet, then the Google Code-In program may be an
option. It's happening right now:

Also, pretty much every open source project is looking for volunteers
all the time. Do you use any open source software that you think you
could contribute something to? Check their homepage.

Or check the organizations that took part in GSoC in the past, e.g.
2012: http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2012

Hi,

Most of Open Source organizations do mentoring for New comers including Students. So you just need to check them out, I am pretty sure thr are alot. For example my org, OpenMRS ofcourse they do some sorta mentoring apart from GSoC period.

As far as I know, there is no 18 year age restriction for GSoc. Is there ?

There is:

http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2012/faqs#age_restrictions

That's from the GSoC 2012 FAQ, but the same restriction existed in all previous incarnations as well, so I would expect it to be a requirement for 2013, too, should Google decide to run the program again.

I would like to add my query to the thread as it concerns the eligibility criteria -

With reference to the previous mail in the thread, does the date at which the participant is supposed to be a student change considerably every year?

Thanks!

It depends on what you consider "considerably," but from past program's requirements I can tell you not really.

Thanks,

Thank you for the reply...

In the GSoC 2012 FAQs page, it says it was April 23rd. If it does not vary more than a month, I'll be happy!

Keep in mind that most open source projects are run by volunteers in
their spare time. They usually don't even have offices or can pay you
for your work (other than maybe through bounty programs) - which is
why they are in GSoC in the first place.

If you really want to work in an office environment, doing open source
work, try some of the bigger projects like Mozilla or companies like
RedHat.
