Yes, but GSoC is supposed to be a full time job. GSoC orgs will want
your full commitment to the programme. If you're already working
somewhere else, this will make them hesitate to accept you. You should
also hesitate from accepting two full-time jobs, which is how you
should view this situation.

It is not impossible, merely difficult and not likely to succeed.

You can always contribute to free software without Google's approval.
You only need Google's approval to get Google's money, but if you want
to reach out to a free org and start contributing, you can do so right
now.

That's true.

I just though as mentors also receive stipends, they will be able to dedicate you more time during GSOC.

Anyway, if I don't have the possibility to go through GSOC, I will try to contact them independently and start working on an interesting project part-time.

I will also check out the European Space Agency for the program you have suggested.

Thank you for your advice :).

The mentoring already happens without money. Neither you nor the
mentor need Google's permission to do this either. All that GSoC does
is provide a monetary incentive. If you don't need the money, then you
don't need GSoC either. All of the ideas pages and mentor contact
information is already public.

There is the European Space Agency's Summer Of Code In Space
programme. It's very similar to GSoC, but much smaller. Only about 20
students got accepted this year. I've heard gossip that it could
happen again this year, but I haven't heard an announcement yet.
