Hi there,

I am a little bit confused about the third term: Must be eligible to work in their country of residence during duration of program. I am currently an international student with F1 visa studying in US. However, I come from China. Am I still eligible for the summer camp?

Best,
Jimmy

If you will be in the US during GSoC then you would have to talk to your admissions office at the university to determine if your visa allows you to participate in the program. Some visas allow international students to participate and some don't.

Google can not sponsor of provide any kind of CPT support.

Hi Jimmy,
I am in a similar position as of yours. I will be joining my Graduate school as a Spring Admit via F-1 Student visa. The visa prohibits me from doing any paid internship outside campus during Summer 2019. But I am not sure about whether or not I am eligible for GSoc. Do you have any more information that can be helpful to me? Thanks in advance :) .

Hi

I know cases where University helped students to accept GSoC as CPT. But as suggested, International Students Office of your University, only can tell you, if you can or can not on case by case basic.

Regards,

Vijay

Hey
F-1 visa means that you will not be able to work for entities other than your university (remotely or in person). You can participate in GSoC after you are elegible for CPT (which in most cases is after 1 year of study but in some cources is allowed in 1st semester), you will have to dicuss the dates of the program with the International Students Office of your university.

If you are not eligible for CPT yet, you have two options
1. Don't stay in USA during GSoC program. This includes community bonding period.
2. Stay in USA, participate but dont accept any money. Google allows this, you can send them an email once your proposal is accepted.

Whatever you do always consult the International Students Office and confirm that you are not in violation of any laws.
