Hi
As a person from a non-technical field who hasn't had any patching experience, will I have very reduced chances of getting selected? I do have good programming and git experience but I have never submitted a patch before.
Thank you

What kind of patch experience you are talking about? Can you explain but more?

By lack of patch experience, I mean that I haven't made any contributions to any open source organisations. Although, I do have coding knowledge.

Contribution to open-source software is not a prerequisite for selection in GSoC. As far as selection is concerned, you have to be able to demonstrate to project mentors that you will be able to carry out tasks required for the project you apply for. Each project will have a different way of doing that: Some might involve application tasks, while others might select purely on the basis of your proposal. Please shortlist projects and contact their mentors for more specific details.

Better first select some good projects from github of your choice like if you skilled in Python choose something related to Python and after that fork the repository and clone the project in your local system. After that try to install and use that to get some experience. Now in this phase you will also read the documentation so if you find something missing or you can add to that project you can open a issue and start working on it. Also you can try to find some beginners friendly  issue to try by commenting I want to solve this issue so assign me like this and try to solve that.

In this way you can gain experience.

Debo
