GSOC participation for H1B visa folks in US

I am a working professional in USA on H1B visa. I would like to start my open source contribution journey through GSOC 2023. Can I participate in GSOC if I am on H1B visa ..?

 We can not advise on visa matters. You need to determine what your visa does and does not allow you to do.

From what I know, a H1B visa holder can not accept payment from any organization other than the H1B visa sponsoring organization. So can I participate in GSOC without accepting any payment from Google..? I would like to participate in GSOC for the experience and learning opportunities.

You have to be eligible to work from the country in which you will be residing as stated in the program rules - regardless of if you accept payment or not.

If you don't plan to accept the stipend then you should let the org know that as many orgs would be happy to mentor you alongside the GSoC program, without you taking one of their limited number of  GSoC contributor projects.
