GSoC 2026 Mentoring Organization Applications are now open (and close Feb 3 1800UTC) at g.co/gsoc. We wanted to highlight a few key points for GSoC 2026.
AI Tooling Guidance
We have created two guidance documents, which are suggestions (not requirements) based on feedback from the 2025 Mentor Surveys:
For Mentoring Orgs: Usage of AI tooling in Google Summer of Code 2026 (for Mentoring Orgs)
For Contributors: Guidance for GSoC Contributors using AI tooling in GSoC 2026 doc
Project Ideas List Suggestions
On your Ideas List and/or your Instructions for GSoC applicants, clearly state your organization's position on the use of AI-generated tooling.
Varied Opinions: It was clear from the Mentor Summit that opinions vary: some organizations strongly encourage AI tooling (under their guidance), others strictly forbid any AI-generated code in their codebase, and many fall in between.
Set Clear Expectations: Your organization should clearly state its expectations around AI usage.
Project Idea Description length: We recommend orgs keep project idea descriptions concise (3-6 sentences)
Select Mentors carefully. Organizations should carefully select Mentors and Org Admins who are active community members and properly represent their organization.
Good luck to all of our orgs applying for GSoC 2026! We will announce all accepted GSoC 2026 Mentoring Organizations on Thursday, February 19th 1800UTC.
Contributor Applications for GSoC 2026 open March 16-31.
Best,
