Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to have 'official' emails about the
project sent to a non-gmail email address. Believe it or not, some of
us don't really use gmail for our 'real' email. I would really rather
not have to frequently check yet another email account just for this
project, and I would hate even more to miss an important email about
it.

I'm not talking about the mailing lists; those I can selectively
forward to my own account from gmail easily enough. I'm talking about
official emails like "you're accepted" or the forthcoming information
about transcripts and taxes. I would ask if there's some way I can
reliably filter for those, but the two I already have ("your
application has been commented" and "you're accepted") don't seem to
have that much in common.

thanks,
/brian

Hi Brian,

Other than that initial acceptance email, all mails about program logistics will be sent to the appropriate mailing list, so I think you're set since you plan to do forwarding.

Cheers,

Why did you apply using an email you don't normally use, then?

You can use any valid email address as a Google Account. I even have
two :-)

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be that simple. Yes, you can use any
e-mail to register a Google Account, but then you can't use most of
the services, because they practically ask for Gmail account. An
example is the Google Project Hosting, required by GSoC. Also if you
add a Gmail service to an account registered with a non-gmail e-mail
then your google account gets "upgraded", e.g Google groups get moved
to the gmail account and the gmail e-mail gets forced to be your
primary e-mail for the account. :-( I really like the gmail web
interface so I use Google Apps to have a gmail interface to my normal
e-mail, which happens to be the one for my google account, but since I
added the gmail service the above happens. Even if I forward messages
automatically from the gmail e-mail to my normal e-mail I will still
not be able to use GTalk as a consequence for my gmail e-mail to be
shown to all the people. Moan!

You could just sign up a dummy GMail account (they are free), and have
it forward *all* email to the email address you would rather use.
Just a thought.

;)

well officially

Create multiple user accounts in connection with any violation of the Agreement or create user accounts by automated means or under false or fraudulent pretenses

with in connection with any violation of the Agreement added in v. 062804

:P
But i love gmail enough to go through it's program policies. Who would have the patience to read the policies of any other service :)
