Hi there!

I was excited to learn about the Google Summer of Code project a few weeks ago and was eager to apply.  However, since then a few questions have come up and I'd like to run them by this community before making any final decisions.  Soon after hearing about GSoC I was notified that I had been accepted for a short term internship this summer.  This means a time commitment of approx. 35 hours a week for a period of a month and a half.  Unfortunately, this overlaps with GSoC.

I believe I would still be able to handle an additional 40 hours of work (if you can consider working with awesome open source initiatives "work") from GSoC each week and still remain sane (that's not all that different from a typical week of coursework at the moment), but I'd like to know if anyone has been in a similar position and if they think this is feasible/reasonable. I would have the second half of the summer entirely free to devote to GSoC.

However, if you truly feel that you've got lots of time and mental space on your hands and can do both, then please speak to your organization honestly about your time commitments when you submit your proposal and see if they can accomodate you.

Additionally, if any mentors have had students in a similar position, I'd like to hear your perspectives.

Finally, if participation in GSoC would be inadvisable, I'd like to know if any mentors would be open to a similar, more informal partnership outside of the GSoC program.

If you'd like to do this, you can just do that! Reach out to the open source organization(s) you're interested in volunteering for and just start contributing. That's the wonderful thing about open source - you don't need a program to get involved.

Cheers,
Carol

You will also need to make sure the company hosting your internship doesn't lock down your rights to release code as open source during the time period.

In practice, we've found that students trying to intern + gsoc are rarely successful and usually fail out by the midterm.
