Hi,

I am an F-1 visa status student. I have an internship offer and hence will be obtaining a CPT soon. Is that CPT good enough to also participate in GSoC along with working on my internship, or does the CPT for GSoC need to be separate and exclusive?

Thanks,
Atreyee

via the FAQ:

You must also be eligible to work in the country in which you'll reside throughout the duration of the program, e.g. if you are in the United States on an F-1 visa, you are welcome to apply to Google Summer of Code as long as you have U.S. work authorization. For F-1 students applying for CPT, Google will furnish you with a letter you can provide to your university to get CPT established once your proposal to the program has been accepted. While in the program you will not be employed by Google. However, the program is administered by Google and Google will act as your host organization for the duration of your program participation. Google is not able to provide any documents to establish you as an employee of Google for CPT purposes. You should contact your school directly to determine if your participation is eligible for CPT with Google acting as host (not employer) during your program participation. You may find it handy to print out this FAQ as part of your request to your university. You may not participate if prohibited by law.

I go to university in US but during the time of the project i will be back in my own country. Since i am not in US, i am not supposed to do it via CPT right ? because CPT is only used if i work inside US not from outside of US ?

Hi,

As it says in the FAQ: "You should contact your school directly to determine if your participation is eligible for CPT with Google acting as host (not employer) during your program participation."

Good luck!

I guess I should have been more clear. I am aware that I need work authorization (in this case, a CPT) and that Google provides one to students, but is a CPT obtained for a different job offer good enough to work on GSoC?

We don't know. Does that mean you meet the eligibility requirements
for GSOC? Only you can determine what makes you eligible to apply
given your particular set of circumstances, not us. If you need help,
maybe speak to a visa specialist or a lawyer.

Cheers,
Carol
