Open source organizations can now submit applications to participate in Google Season of Docs! The deadline to apply is April 2, 2024 at 18:00 UTC.

Google Season of Docs allows open source organizations to apply for a grant based on their documentation needs. If selected, open source organizations will use their grant to hire a technical writer directly to complete their documentation project.

How does my organization apply to take part in Google Season of Docs?

Take a look at the examples of project ideas, then create a project proposal based on your open source project’s actual documentation needs. Your goal is to attract technical writers to your organization, making them feel comfortable about approaching the organization and excited about what they can achieve.

Organizations submit their applications through this form. Organization applications close on April 2, 2024 at 18:00 UTC.

How do technical writers take part in Google Season of Docs?

Technical writers interested in working with accepted open source organizations can share their contact information via the Google Season of Docs GitHub repository; or they may submit proposals directly to the organizations using the contact information shared on the organization project page. Technical writers do not submit a formal application through Google Season of Docs.

Technical writers interested in participating in the 2024 Google Season of Docs should read our guide for technical writers on the Season of Docs website. Please note the deadline for organizations to hire a technical writer is May 22, 2024.

How is Google Season of Docs different from Google Summer of Code?

Google Season of Docs is:

  • Much smaller than GSoC: tens of participating organizations, rather than hundreds
  • A grant program, rather than a mentorship program: organizations receive funds to hire professional technical writers directly
  • Is focused on creating content: both project documentation, and case studies exploring how organizations solve problems through documentation
Technical writer participants in the Google Season of Docs program are expected to have significant technical writing experience and the ability to work on documentation projects independently. The organizations are expected to assist technical writers in onboarding to the project and provide the information needed to complete the proposed documentation projects. It is not expected that technical writer participants will receive mentoring in technical writing from organization admins during the program.

For more information about the program visit the Google Season of Docs site. If you have additional questions, please email the Google Season of Docs team at season-...@google.com.
