Hey

I have a little question:
My summer vacation starts on june 23th, till then I still have my
finals.
Is it a problem to start a little later?
I sertainly will do some things, but the progress won't be that much.
I will also make sure to catch up with the rest of the coders after my
finals.

What do you google-guys (and women offcourse) have to say about this?

Thank you
Sander

Hi there,

I'm not from Google, but I am mentoring 2 students this summer. I can
tell you the MOST important thing is to talk to your mentor. As a
mentor I'd be pretty peeved if someone told me a *week* before the
start of Google SoC that they couldn't work for a few weeks, or that
they couldn't give as many hours as they thought they could for a few
weeks.

Here's the thing -- you KNOW when your finals are. You likely knew
when you applied, much less when you got accepted. And you're waiting
until the last minute to say "whoops, I have finals...."

That being said, you have to talk to your mentor as soon as possible.
Likely they'll say "that's OK," but you should make a schedule for
yourself, spending as much time as possible on the Google SoC -- maybe
3 hours a week? 6?

Both my students told me 2 weeks ago that they have finals and would
need to start a bit late (one 1 week late, one 2 weeks late). I was a
*little* miffed, because having been a student I know that you don't
know exactly what days you have finals are, but you know when classes
end, when finals begin and when finals end. You know this stuff at the
beginning of the semester.

Because of the community bonding period, though, I knew my students
are eager to get into the game, and we've already done some of the
planning work, so I just said "OK, do you have anything else scheduled
like vacations?" to be clear that I wanted to know dates folks would
be unavailable.

Ultimately there are 2 choices -- keep you or let you go. I don't
think any organization would let a coder go because of this, because
at least you can get 2 months of coding time in, just not 3.

This was a very big reply :)
Thanks

I know It is a little late, but I really hadn't thought about that.
What I sertainly can tell my mentors is that I'm going to give
everything I can to the project.
I even cancelled my holliday to be able to code.

Starting a little later won't affect my motivation on finishing my
parts...

I am Sander's mentor and he did bring this up with me. I am willing be
to be flexible but did not know how this would work with regards to
the timeline that Google has set up, especially when it comes to
evaluations.

I am surprised that this question has not been addressed yet. A lot of
students could be affected by this scheduling. For example, Stanford,
where Google's founders met, has finals in June. I wouldn't have
thought that students who attend schools with a later final exams
schedule would have to miss out on GSoC, or be at some disadvantage.

Thanks.

i also have my finals in june. i mentioned this in my project proposal
so that google and the daisy people would know that my work during the
first half of the project will be minimal. i expect to compensate for
this during july and august. this was not a problem as i was accepted
nonetheless.

i personally think it's pretty lame not to mention this issue in the
application. everybody should know when their finals end. mentioning it
is somewhat of a risk but at least you're being honest.

As long as you and your mentor have discussed any changes to your coding schedule and you both agree about them, Google is fine with you making adjustments.

Hello everyone,
I had a question on this so I'd like to clarify - if you need to get a later start or take a week off for vacation or whatever, that's fine.  You will still need to have completed your project to the satisfaction of your mentor by the mid-term and final survey deadlines.
