apt-get install x-chat

<no, just kidding, though it's not a bad idea.>

You can add irc.freenode.net as an account. Then create a user login
for freenode if you haven't been there before.

Use Mibbit.

www.mibbit.com - Online IRC Client. I have never been comfortable with IRC / Pidgin.

To use IRC with Pigdin, you need to add an IRC account with server name irc.freenode.net and your own username.

Just click to connect and /join #gsoc, or select "join a chat" in the "Buddies" menu.

hi..

this should help you
http://stfu.blogs.ablenet.org/100/how_to_connect_to_irc_with_pidgin_gaim
just use the server irc.freenode.net ...

PS: If you are behind a proxy server, and are unable to connect even
once, then may be your network-admin has blocked the ports used for
irc.
In that case, the best idea is to use an online irc client, like
mibbit.com. Another alternative is to use tor (I haven't used it
myself, but I am sure you will be able to connect using tor).

Cheers

follow the instructions the users above me posted.

Wanted to say.. have you considered using another IRC client? IMO
Pidgin isn't very good for IRC. If on linux, try xchat.. if on
windows......

....

well, I dunno what to say for Windows. I use HydraIRC.

Use an online IRC client...
http://www.mibbit.com

OR

Use tor < https://www.torproject.org/ > to bypass the proxy
and then follow these instructions to connect to freenode...
http://freenode.net/irc_servers.shtml#tor

Cheers..
