Installation softwares queries

  I would like to know if working on Google Summer of Code requires me to download software on my local computer or if I may work on Github Codespace.

Well, I suppose you mean, you will be working on a 'project' in some open-source organisation and then it depends on what type of project it is.
But to answer your question in short, yes generally speaking it is recommended that you would work on your local machine.
