I am planning to create a wearable for Blind people that ll detect objects in front of them , and alerts via their Android phone. I submitted this idea to an open-source org . And they are okay with that. However, I would like to know whether projects of this type are welcome for GSOC.
thanks,

Yes, AFAIK OpenHardware projects are acceptable if it have anything do with code, (writing drivers may be ?)
I have seen projects like BeagleBone participated in GSoC .

Thank you,
Harsha

thanks,

It's hard for me to tell if you mean you want to apply as a mentoring organization or as a student? If you want to apply as a mentoring organization you must have already released code for your project under an OSI-approved license and must have at least two people in your community who want to participate as mentors and org admins. If you meet that criteria, you're welcome to apply.

If you mean you'd like to do this project as a student, that's entirely up to the mentoring organization you apply to whether or not they'd like this project to be part of their GSoC projects. You should speak to them directly about it, it's up to them.

Thanks,
Carol

Actually , mam , let me be frank. I want to participate as a student :) . But my mentoring organization asked me to confirm whether this sort of projects are permissible.

Okay, so since the mentoring organizations for this year's program haven't been chosen yet there's nothing for you to do right now except continue volunteering for an open source organization of your choice. When you discuss with the mentoring org for this year's program about you participating, make sure you speak to them about the project and they approve of mentoring this project before you apply.

Thanks,
Carol
