Hai all,
I am an engineering student, interested in participating in
gsoc2011.I want to create an open source project rather than
developing an existing one. I have a chess like game in my mind,
which could be easy for children to play and increase their reasoning
capability.
Can i make a proposal on it? am i likely to be selected?

With regards,
Phanindra Ramesh

You would need to find a participating organization that would be
willing to accept your idea as a project. Not sure if that would work,
but you could try looking for orgs doing machine learning. Or maybe
try via the programming language. E.g. when you're doing it in Python,
speak to the Python Foundation (should they participate again). Also,
wasn't Tux for Kids participating in the past?

I would suggest you to propose that project for Sugar Labs (http://sugarlabs.org/), but wait until accepted organizations are announced...

Hi there,

What Dirk said. Also, if you can't find any organization after they've been announced who would be willing to accept your project, you can also see if an advisor or professor at your university would support mentoring your project. You could then apply to have your project under the Google OSPO umbrella organization [1]. I would only recommend this as a last resort, though, as we only choose a couple of these projects per year.

Thanks,
Carol

I need to make contact with the mentors from now, isn't it? that's why

Have a look at the list of orgs from last year:

http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/program/accepted_orgs/google/gsoc2010

In the "tags" column, search for "Java".

The list for 2011 is not out yet (wait until March 18), but that
should give you an idea of orgs to talk to (ask them if they plan to
participate in 2011, if they don't already indicate it on their
homepage).

No, that starts on March 18. Please review the timeline [1].

You're always welcome to make contact with open source organizations about coding, of course. But you need to wait until mentoring organizations are announced in order to speak to them about your specific GSoC project and to see if they're participating for this year.

Cheers,

I think Every organization will greet new ideas.
But you should wait till the organizations are listed.

Must we wait for the organizations are listed, or must begin to
contact organizations if we have an idea to propose (before the list
is published)?

Thanks.

No, you do not need to wait to contact any open source organization of any kind. Just keep in mind that its possible they won't be accepted, even if they apply.

Cheers,
