Hi,
I'm a newbie to Stackdriver, but I find logging as a "black-hole" for many of my clients. Most of them who have only on-premise data centers, looking to maybe go into cloud somewhere down the line.

I've been reading some of the documentations - and I would start to use Stackdriver logging for my clients, even if they at the moment are on-premise. It is traditional server/storage/network solutions with mainly Windows servers and applications

Instead of going Splunk, Greylog or that path - I'm wondering if I can collect data from on-premise servers and ship it directly to Stackdriver. Also an idea could be to collect data from various sources internally (e.g. syslog, snmp-data ++), filter and parse it, before shipping it to Stackdriver.

Is this doable - or isn't Stackdriver the way to go for this scenario?

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks
Ole Anders

Hey there,

Thanks so much for reaching out and for your interest in Stackdriver Logging.  Apologies for the delayed response... We don't officially support logging for on premise resources today though we do have some customers who have workarounds for this because the limitations of Stackdriver Logging are still less than the limitations of not having it in Stackdriver Logging.  We're actively exploring better support for logs coming from on premise resources.  Would you be open to a short call over Hangouts to discuss?

Best,

Mary

Hi group,

Have we got any solution for monitoring on-premise VMs and machines? Without using any 3rd party connector. Solution should be something GCP native.

Thanks,
Vikki

Hi Vikki,

Great question! Stackdriver works closely with our partner Blue Medora to provide metric and log forwarding to Stackdriver from outside of GCP and Anthos. Blue Medora supports a wide range of hardware and software products across on-prem and other clouds, and they're very receptive to adding additional sources if they don't currently offer what you need. There is no additional charge on top of standard Stackdriver pricing for using Blue Medora to send custom metrics and logs.

This blog post is a good introduction to the offering and describes how to get started. Happy to connect you with Blue Medora or answer any questions you have about our joint solution.

Best,
Marie
