Hello,

I have a GAE application in US Central (say Project A)  and another GAE application in US East1 (say Project B). I want one Stackdriver dashboard to monitor these two together. Hence I merged Project B onto Project A's workspace which is in Central. Now I have a merged dashboard.

Question - Assume a scenario when US central region went down and my project A workspace is not available. Will this make my merged dashboard completely unavailable (including east region monitoring too)?

Thanks,
Anoop

Hi, Anoop,

GCP projects aren't zoned. The same project can host data and VMs in multiple regions. So your monitoring configs (dashboards, alerts) should be available even if one zone goes down (and the monitoring data for other zones should be available as well).

Out of curiosity, was there anything in our documentation that led you to believe that projects are tied to a single zone? If so, please point us at it so we could fix that.
Hope this helps,
        Igor

Hello Igor,

Thanks for your quick response.

I agree that projects are not zoned and project can host data across regions,  but my question is on Stackdriver workspace.

Here I have two app engine projects in two different regions. Example Project A is in US Central and Project B in US East. (Forget about zones for now).

My requirement is to monitor these two projects in one Stackdriver monitoring dashboard.  To do this, Google recommends to merge Stackdriver workspace of one project with the other project’s workspace.

From my example, I am merging Project B into Project A’s workspace. When we do this, Project B gets added into Project A’s workspace.  Now I have one common Workspace for Project A and Project B which is in Project A’s workspace.

Project A’s workspace is in US central.

Question– “If US Central goes down, will I lose this common Workspace and hence lose Project B monitoring?

Shown below is my understanding on Stackdriver workspace. Correct me if I am incorrect which may help myself to find answers to my above question.

“When I create a Stackdriver Workspace for a project, it gets created in a zone (under a region) where that project belongs to.  This Workspace must have some metadata for the project that it is hosted (like custom dashboards, alerting policies etc). If this is gone, then I won’t get alerts or monitoring”

Thanks,

Anoop Saleem

Hi, Anoop,

Sorry that it wasn't obvious from my earlier response. Neither GCP projects nor Stackdriver workspaces are tied to a specific zone. They are both global entities, and the workspace metadata is replicated across multiple zones, so all of your dashboards will be available (even the ones for the GAE app in project A — they just won't have any data while the zone for the GAE app from project A is down).

As long as it is replicated and global, I am good to proceed further. Thanks for your answers.

When I further looked at it I got one more question from your below highlighted statement. You have mentioned that these are global entities but saying replicated across zones. To me global means replicated across multiple regions.

This is my exact question- Will the workspace metadata is replicated across multiple regions?

Clarifying — it's truly global and is replicated across multiple zones in multiple regions.
