problems installing Monitoring Agent on GoogleCloudPlatform

I already have a Stackdriver account, and I have the Monitoring Agent properly installed on an existing virtual machine.

I tried to install the Monitoring Agent also in a new virtual machine.


Using these commands:
curl -O https://repo.stackdriver.com/stack-install.sh
sudo bash stack-install.sh --write-gcm



it seems they are installed correctly, this is the output of the shell:

however if I go on Stackdriver, I see only the basic metrics for the new instance:
CPU Usage
Disk I/O
Network Traffic


while for the old instance I see the full set:

CPU Usage
CPU Load
CPU Steal
Memory Usage
Swap Usage
Disk Usage
Disk I/O
Network Traffic
Open TCP Connections
Processes


What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

Your agent metrics don't seem to be getting into Stackdriver. Please try the steps at https://cloud.google.com/monitoring/agent/troubleshooting and let us know if they work for you.

Hi Igor,

by running any of these two commands:
sudo service stackdriver-agent status
sudo service stackdriver-agent restart

it returns no error and no output

isn't it strange?

Daniele,

On newer distros, "service ... restart" won't print any output, so that's expected. It is a bit strange that "service ... status" also produces no output.
What does "ps -ef | grep collectd" show? Are there any *collectd processes running? Are there any log entries from collectd in /var/log/messages?

If you send me (in a private message off-list) your project id and instance id that exhibits the problem, I can check whether the agent is sending anything from that instance into our internal metrics store.

You could also try to uninstall and reinstall the agent package, in case the installation got corrupted somehow.

I am using a Centos6 distribution
(i sent you project id and instance id privately)

"ps -ef | grep collectd” shows:
daniele  29769 18537  0 18:41 pts/0    00:00:00 grep collectd

on "/var/log/messages” I could not find any relevant messages

Thanks for the info, Daniele,

Looks like the agent is not running on your VM. Is there anything in /var/log/messages from "stackdriver-agent"?

The first thing I'd suggest doing is the full uninstall/reinstall. If the agent still doesn't start up, we can try running the agent process manually to see if console errors indicate a problem.

Have you added any configuration beyond the defaults that come with the agent?

Hi Igor,

on /var/log/messages there is nothing whatsoever from stackdriver-agent

how should I uninstall it?
I tried running: sudo yum remove stackdriver-agent
and this is the output:

Eek, there's a bug in our %preun scripts -- thanks for catching that, I've opened an issue internally to track.
In the meantime, you should be able to use "rpm -e stackdriver-extractor --noscripts" and "rpm -e stackdriver-agent --noscripts" to remove the packages. Then follow the installation instructions.

it seems the two packages are interdependent
no matter which one I try to remove first, it always gives a dependency error

[SHELL]$ sudo rpm -e stackdriver-extractor --noscripts

You're correct, sorry. Should have added "--nodeps", so "rpm -e stackdriver-extractor --noscripts --nodeps" and "rpm -e stackdriver-agent --noscripts --nodeps".

I managed to uninstall it with the --nodeps flag.

These look worrisome:
/sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib64/libyajl.so.1 is empty, not checked.
/sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib64/libyajl.so.1.0.7 is empty, not checked.
/sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib64/libyajl.so.1 is empty, not checked.
/sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib64/libyajl.so.1.0.7 is empty, not checked.

I bet those are the ones that cause the dlopen error from write_gcm.so -- libyajl is a dependency of write_gcm. It's possible that the "yajl" package is corrupted on your machine.

Could you please "rpm -e --nodeps yajl" and then reinstall the "yajl" package?

Hmm, I do see "yajl-1.0.7-3.el6.x86_64" listed at http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6/os/x86_64/Packages/. For some reason your package manager isn't picking it up. Maybe you need to run "yum makecache" on your system?
Can you please paste the contents of your /etc/os-release, if available, and the output of "uname -a"?

How about /etc/redhat-release?
I'm basically trying to determine what CentOS6 release your system is running -- it's possible that your CentOS is too old to support the monitoring agent, and we need to update our supported versions page.

Oh, just realized something: you're running "rpm -i", which expects a file. Does "yum install yajl" work? An alternative is to download yajl-1.0.7-3.el6.x86_64.rpm from the CentOS mirror and try to install from a file.

Hi Igor, it shouldn't depend on the OS version, because I have another machine where the monitoring agent was correclty installaed and it also has Centos6

GOOD NEWS!!!

I managed to install "yajl" with:
sudo yum install yajl

then I run:

curl -O "https://repo.stackdriver.com/stack-install.sh"
sudo bash stack-install.sh --write-gcm

and it seems to have been installed correctly:
[SHELL]$ sudo service stackdriver-agent status
stackdriver-collectd (pid  30864) is running...
