I just downloaded Google Sky Maps for Android and I can't wipe the
smile from my face. But when I search for something, even something
simple like sun or moon, I get " No results found" . What am I doing
wrong? Does this feature only work over the phone providers signal?
Because I have limited service, I thought that might be the problem.

Hi there,

It's not a network issue, everything you need is on the phone already.

You can only search for objects that are displayed at the moment. Can
you actually see the Sun or Moon or any of the other named objects
you're searching for? If you can't search for the Sun or Moon, it may
be that the "planets" layer is not enabled. You can check this by
tapping the screen and seeing if the Saturn icon is orange or white,
if it's white then tap it once and it should go back to orange.

If the layer is enabled, you can see the Sun with its name in the sky
view, but it won't come up in search results, that's a bigger problem
which we should investigate.

Best wishes,
Dominic

First off: Thank you, Dominic, for being here to help people like myself.

Planet Layer was enabled. I've since found that search DOES work, but only if I type my query. I had been using the microphone button and speaking my query, and although my spoken search word is correctly transcribed into the search bar, I get "no results found". If I type in the same word, everything works perfectly. I can even search and "find" objects that are NOT currently visible. Most recently, we searched for Saturn and were directed to a point on the ground 20 feet to the north of where we were standing. I have a brand new HTC Droid Incredible. My son has a new Motorola Droid X. He can speak or type and get results every time. So, the problem is with my phone. Any ideas?
                                                    Thanks Again for your help,
                                                                Dan

Hi Dan,

I hadn't tried the voice search interface in SkyMap that much before,
just tried it out since your message and asked a couple of friends.

Things we've noticed include:
- SkyMap results are much more reliable if you search within the app
itself rather than using a general voice search (don't know if this is
what you were doing).
- Voice search differs for us (we have a small range of accents in the
team!)
- SkyMap searches are sensitive to whitespace - sometimes when I used
voice search and then edited the resulting text manually, this left
problematic whitespace. This whitespace sensitivity at least is
something we should fix.

When you were pointed at the ground for Saturn, is that the direction
that the app thought the planet was in? Saturn being currently below
the horizon for you wouldn't be a bug, but search pointing you to
somewhere other than the current expected direction of the search
target would be.

Best wishes,
Dominic

Hello Dominic,

After launching the Sky Map app, I have been searching by touching the "menu" soft key on my HTC Incredible which displays six application options, one of which is "search'. Touching "search" brings up the keyboard on the bottom left of which is the microphone button I have been using to voice search. So, I believe I have been searching within the app. When I use the voice search to enter my search term, voice search correctly transcribes the search term into the search bar at the top of the screen. But unlike a typed query, the search term is highlighted and there IS a space between the last letter of the search term and the cursor. If I touch the space bar on the keyboard to remove the highlighting, and then backspace twice to remove the spaces to the left of the cursor, suggested objects are immediately displayed below the search bar just as they should be. So, as you suggest, voice search on my HTC Incredible within the Sky Map app will not work because the search term is displayed with a space after it. However, the same voice search performed on my son's Motorola Droid X  DOES work because on that phone, there is NO SPACE after the last letter in the displayed search term. Also on the Motorola, the term is NOT highlighted, but it IS underlined, presumably because the "s" in "saturn" should be capitalized.
Oh. Here's something that might be significant: My HTC phone is running Android 2.2, but my son's Motorola in running 2.3.

At this point, Dominic,  I'm not sure if I'm helping you somehow, or just taking up your valuable time.  I am fine with typing my searches in Sky Map, but if you need anything from me, I'm also happy to help in anyway I can.
                                                                          -Dan
