Getting a Site's Verification Status

Prior to this API, I was using the admin tools feed to determine if a site was verified or not. I see that method is no longer documented (I assume it's depreciated) and I was wondering if performing a get with the site verification api will do the same thing (Ie if there isn't a webresource try to do an insert). Does anyone know if this works? I noticed with the older admin tools api that the site won't actually show as verified using that method until someone logs into the dashboard (www.google.com/a/<sitename>). I'm curious if I never log into the dashboard if there would be any ill effects to the end user.
