Greetings,

First of all I am a Tech contracted by a client who needs a backup
solution for their Google Search Appliance. I have no prior dealing
with the appliance. With what little exposure I think this thing is
awesome and I am learning a lot from the forum. Our immediate need is
a backup solution for their Google device.

The customer would consider a local backup solution or a cloud back-up
solution and of course they are looking for a solution that balances
performance and price.

The client says the QNAP device has a 5TB capacity but they are only
using 1TB of its capacity right now.

So what is the best solution, off-site backup? Cloud backup solution
(I'm not familiar with this) They have backup exec for their other
servers, could I use this with an external HDD for an option.

Any and all help is much appreciated, and please remember I'm a Noob
to all this so please explain in as much detail as possible,

Thanks Auldron

The appliance can't be backed up like a regular server. For all
intents and purposes, it's not a regular server. You do not have
access to the filesystem.

The configuration of the appliance can be exported to an XML file,
which can be imported to a new appliance. The appliance can then
recrawl documents, etc, and will restore itself to its previous state,
more or less.

If the appliance fails, Google will repair it or send you a new one.

If your goal is to guarantee continuous search uptime, you need more
than one appliance. Two or more appliances can be configured in a
mirroring arrangement, so that if one fails you simply run searches
against the other.

Hello.

I have a point to ask on this. A do actually have lots of documents
(html, pdf, etc.) crawled by GSA. I already understand that the
configuration is backed up, so that on a machine replacement e.g., all
document are recrawled.

On the particular case of PDFs, i am feeding their metadata to the GSA
via XML feeds. That's because our plain-old PDFs don't have them all
their metadata inside.

Is there among export/backup options one that allows to backup this
kind of metadata (previous xml feeds)?

Thanks.

No. You'd need to rerun the feed.

Hi,

Some Conectors do allow you to save the feed XML that is submitted to the GSA. This is not a function of teh GSA itself and if you are using the on-board connectors thei is not possible.

In reality, it will probably be quicker (and easier) to re-run the feed as Dave has said.

Thanks,

Richard
