In order to stay safe while completing your science project, please read the Official Rules. If your project contains chemicals or tissues, please also follow the guidelines below. Finally, don't forget to provide us with appropriate documentation for any (or all) of the following that apply for your project:

  • If you are working in a registered laboratory, research center or school laboratory, you must follow the lab's safety guidelines. Please attach the lab's safety guidelines you are following, along with the physical contact/location details of the lab and the manager of the lab.
  • If you think your project might involve the use of hazardous chemicals, you should not handle them yourself – your adult mentor (or lab supervisor) should do this. Please provide us with the contact details for your mentor/supervisor.
  • If you are using a chemical or tissue that you think might require specific safety and health guidelines, please do your research, ask your adult mentor/supervisor for instructions, and follow any and all applicable guidelines.  Please also attach any guidelines you are following, along with the contact details for your mentor/supervisor.
Good luck!

Hi,

You can add them to your Google Drive and then embed them in your References and Acknowledgements section using the Add Media button in the dashboard - don't forget to make sure that the privacy settings are public on the web so we can see them!

Good luck!

So what if I was to make a product to help people but you have to eat it. Is it to unsafe because I would not know if it works unless I test it on a person. I really want to be in this competition and I know I can make something amazing!

Hi,

It is against the rules to test on humans so this would not be allowed.

Thanks

IF I INCLUDE THE DATA ABOUT A RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL AND INVOLVE CALCULATIONS ON IT IN MY PROJECT IS IT ALLOWED?? WE ARE NOT PHYSICALLY USING ANY OF THAT IN THE PROJECT BUT INVOLVING THEORETICAL CALCULATIONS ON IT

Hi,

You can use pre-existing data in your project, but remember that you will need to test something in your project to get results whcih you can discuss. This can be your idea on a smaller scale - just discuss why you have done it this way (to stay safe!) and what you would do if you had access to all materials.

Good luck!

How could a project incorporate mosquitoes? I see in the rules that data from observing animals in their natural habitat is allowed, but I'm not sure how this applies. For example,
if I count mosquitoes within a certain area is that allowed?
What if I contained the area with a net and then removed the net after I'd counted them?
If I count mosquitoes caught in a pre-existing mosquito trap?
If I hatch mosquitoes from larvae?

Thanks,
Naomi

Hi,

You cannot catch the mosquitoes in a net or any other kind of trap - you can only observe them in their natural habitat. You cannot change that habitat, which you would by catching them.

I would recommend that you look at another idea without animals.

Good luck!

Hello,
We would like to know if working with a spark wheel to make fire with safety equipment and a mentor is against the rules.
Thank you.

Hi,

It all depends on how you are doing it. Health and safety is the most important thing in Google Science Fair, so all projects should include health and safety procedures followed. An experiment like this should be undertaken in a formal facility under a controlled environment and run directly by a professional - you should not undertake this yourself.

Good luck!

The official rules mention no "hazardous chemicals" but do not specify. What qualifies as a hazardous chemical? Is it based on the fire diamond or some other standard? If proper safety procedures were observed, is it ok? Thanks

Hi, Mentor

What if our mentor is unwilling to share their contact details in the health & safety section as it is public?

Hi,

It is defined by the biosafety level - they must be BSL1 or below.

Good luck!

Hi,

If you worked with a mentor we will need to have their details in the project.

Good luck!

Hi, Mentor
I didn't get you.
& if we have multiple mentors; & should one provide all the mentors contact details or only one is enough?

Hi,

You should include the details of all people who helped you.

Good luck!

Hannah:

Thanks for clarifying the BSL requirement. What about nonbiologicals? (e.g. chemicals like ethanol or acetone) As long as I followed the recommended safety guidelines in their MSDS's, are they allowed?

I've also noticed many past projects listing accolades from other fairs in their "about me" sections. Is this recommended? Will it affect the judging process positively or negatively?

Thanks

Hi,

It is up to you what you choose to include in the About me section - all finalists are different!

As long as you have worked in a lab with a mentor and followed all health and safety precautions, and included the guidelines, then that should be fine.

Good luck!

I've notice that Shree Bose used cancer cell lines in her project, so can we still use cancer cell lines in our project?

Would I be able to participate if I didn't have the necessary equipment? What if I don't have what's necessary, but I have an idea?
