Change marker icons with directionsRenderer

I'm looking to give the start position marker a new icon image, and the end position marker a different icon image when using the DirectionsRenderer object. I know that you can give both the start and end points the same image by setting markerOptions to a MarkerImage class, but I'm looking to give the start and end points different icons. Any Ideas?
