Not a pity. Stack Overflow is GREAT. They have a great platform for
doing tech Q&A. Many times when you going looking from the solution to
an tech issue, you will find the the best, authoritative, validated
info on a Stack Overflow entry. Suspend disbelief and give it a run.

Note, Andrew didn't say we are throwing this over there and "You're on
your own, kids!"

Google tech support folks using Stack Overflow for tech Q&A will
produce a valuable resource.

I'm tempted to agree, with the minor caveat that I wish they'd thrown
this over to http://gis.stackexchange.com/ instead. I can see why not,
in that many of the questions are not, strictly speaking, GIS related.
The exposure to more people on these lists of GIS concepts wouldn't
hurt, though. In any event, I do like the idea of Google support
actively monitoring Stack Overflow and helping out there. It's a
better way in many ways to help eliminate duplicate questions and
encourage community support. Keeping the code dumps down may be
problematic, though....

Thank you for chiming in with your thoughts.  We're listening :-)

As Chris Broadfoot mentioned in the original post, we believe that the move to Stack Overflow will be beneficial.  Although the occasional code dump may occur, we're in the early stages and this is our (i.e., you and us) opportunity to shape how the community participates on Stack Overflow.  There are small things, like tagging questions that are more about JavaScript than maps with the "JavaScript" tag in order to make them more broadly accessible to JavaScript developers, and bigger things, like identifying which is a more suitable answer in those instances when a question may have multiple answers.  To avoid code dumps, we will/should continue to guide developers to link to live code.

At least better than the interface of the new groups - in any case.

Although the decision is interesting: No propaedeutic announcement,
no questions to the top posters of the group, very internal and
closed.

I have enjoyed being able to simply scan the topic headings in this
group and click on any that caught my eye. Doing this gave me a warm
feeling (perhaps misplaced) that I was 'keeping up' with the ebb and
flow of maps API knowledge. Sigh...

OK, over on SO I subscribed to the tag 'google-maps-api-3'
We will see how it goes.

If you use Chrome, definitely try the "Question Monitor" extension, too:

I find it very useful for scanning SO topics. I've also got a "Google Maps" filter set up so I get email notification of new questions. You can use it too:
